If you’re feeling a little hungry, but there’s no specific dish you’re into, the alternative is often snacks. Chop some gizzards, some prawns with a guilho, some cracklings… In short, everything that comes out of the kitchen quickly disappears from the table, because these are dishes to share.
To accompany it, you can never say an imperial (or fine, if you’re snacking in the north of the country) or even a glass of wine, be it white, red or full.
Heading further towards the Algarve, a red fruit sangria may be more desirable, more suited to the setting close to the sea and snacks that combine what is harvested with what is created on land, such as the cockle patties at the V5 Petiscaria e bar, in Ferragudo.
If you need to top off the snack at the end with something more complex, there’s always a safety nail on the menu or one nearby.
Don’t have a bite of good places to eat? So whet your appetite here.
1. Tasca das Fodinhas

That’s the name, Tasca das Fodinhas, in Ponte de Lima, and it’s better to get familiar with it now, because those that follow the menu are equally pornographic (as is the food served in this deli). There are from hot fucks in the rachinha, which are pataniscas, quince crumbs, a marmalade with cheese in squares, to the well-stuffed chicken butt, which are green eggs stuffed with onion, tuna and parsley.
On a previous visit by MAGG to Tasca das Fodinhas, we learned that of the more than 25 dishes, the most popular is the hot fodinha, as well as the quecas (large, full or half) – the wine served in a bowl.
2. Palmeira Pastry Shop

We have to confess: we stopped at Casa de Pasto da Palmeira, in Porto, not so much for the snacks, more for the French toast whose days are numbered. It’s almost off the menu, so it’s best not to take too long. Since we started with dessert, let’s talk about the rest of the menu, although there is no right order from here: with snacks, it is to mix everything at once.
Try the wild sausage muffins, the “bacalhau com natas” and olive paste croquettes, the éclairs with goat cheese and the chestnuts baked in butter and fleur de sel. The list goes on in an equally irreverent way, including in the desserts, which go beyond French toast. There are also red fruits, lemon and meringues, chocolate mousse and fleur de sel ice cream.
3. The Marquis’s Delicacy

The facade does not go unnoticed by those passing Estrada Nacional 1, so it will not be difficult to find O Manjar do Marquês in Pombal. The restaurant is also dedicated to snacks and there are some that don’t get “almost always on the menu”, such as baked horse mackerel and cod fritters.
Always guaranteed are the samosas, cod cakes, pork loin nibbles and “our” turnip migas. All this is accompanied by the famous tomato rice, almost the brand image of O Manjar do Marquês, served with the snacks.
4. Horatio

Every day the menu of O Horácio, in Linda-a-Velha, changes, leaving only the taste of everything that comes out of the kitchen. There are more complex dishes, such as pork cheeks with migas, as well as snacks for any time of the day.
Natural cockles (9€), mussels à Bulhão Pato (15€), grilled razor clams (12.50€) are some of the varieties you can find and can be topped off with a comfort soup, either with turnip greens or a seafood cream . The restaurant is the ideal place to grab a bite to eat on football match days and on those days it is well deserved to drown your nerves in the famous Bife à Horácio.
5. Eduardo das Conquilhas Brewery

Since 1965, Eduardo das Conquilhas has been slowly conquering bellies. It does not serve dishes to eat in one sitting, it sometimes brings ham croquettes (€3 for two pieces), sometimes Spanish mussels (€13.90), some fried shrimps with garlic (€29), the emblematic conquilhas à bulhão pato ( €14.20) or a rump woodpecker (€10.90).
On days when you prefer one snack and a more complex dish, you can try the homemade alheira de Chaves with egg, rice and fries (€11.50) or the peeled shrimp rice with cockles (€34).
It is also possible to order for takeaway and home delivery.
6. Ilheu Tavern

We head towards the south bank to talk about Taberna Ilhéu, in Montijo. It is a typical restaurant in decor and traditional in the menu it serves. In clay dishes, they can come with streaks and crust, as well as cheeses and sausages, crackling or olives and bread.
Cheese is an industrious presence at the table, as is the house wine served in a pitcher and sometimes necessary until there are no more snacks on the table. More typically, you can’t ask for it, although you can top it up with a house liqueur at the end of the meal.
7. V5 Petiscaria and Bar

The name says it all: it’s a snack bar, with live music on some nights to live up to the bar concept. In the V5 Petiscaria e bar, in Ferragudo, Algarve, you will find the most traditional to the most modern combinations, but always chop until you are satisfied.
You can start with a au gratin chevre with aubergine and honey (5€), add cockles (3.50€) and some chicken goujons with sweet chilli sauce (3.50€). There’s nothing like ending with “The Perfect Classic”, hamburger accompanied by fried onion rings and fries (9.50€) and dessert of the day (3€).
